Background Ideas for Magazine

Model Poses for Magazine

Audience Profile

What age are your audience?
The target audience are aged around sixteen to twenty pkus years olds that are intrested in music and have a background knowledge on the music. It also for people who are wanting to keep up to date with current music as well as old music. I thought that making this our age group audience is the best to target due to younger generation to inform and keep them up to date with music.

What other music magazines do they like?
This sort of target audience is similar to magazines such as: Q, karrange and NME. This gives us ideas on how to set the layout of the magazine and shows us how to get our target audiences to buy our magazine rather than competitors.

What other intrestes do they have? (e.g. what music might they listen to?)
This target audience are intrested in all sorts of music from the classic music to up to date music such as lady gaga, lily allen, green day, and ACDC etc. They have a wide range of music that they are intrested in so we can include so many generes in the magazine. This gives us a wide range to talk about in the magazine instead of sticking to one section of music industry, giving more options for the readers and audience of the magazine, so it's suited for all music lovers. With deciding it has a mass target auidence making it more popular, but could also be reffered with having a niche auidence, but aimed at all music fans.

How would they spend their money?
People that are targeted on buying music magazine tend to spend there money on Ipod's, music CDs and the magazines. So it's for young adults that can afford a bit more expensive magazine, so for music lovers they are more likely to pay for expensive music magazine. People who will be dedicated with buying the magazine monthly who are commited will spend money on band merchandise, band tickets. We could improve the technology of the magazine by offering Apps for our audience to purchase for Ipad's and Ipod's so this could

What expectations might they have?
They will want a magazine that has the key information on gigs, tours, festival with a wide range of artists and fun. They will want a magazine that will stand out from the others and competitions to gigs or meeting the artists.

What is wanted to be achieved!

By researching a range of magazines, Q magazine is what we aim for the magazines to look similar like and have similar themes throughout. Also Q and our target audience will be similar and seeing how they attract audiences from their front cover, and gave us an  idea of how we want the layout our magazine for the similar audience, aiming it as young adults and music lovers, typically ages 18+. Want to use bright and simple colour scheme of red, black, white, blue and gold having a theme throughout so it isn't boring but still attracts the audience and readers. Our logo should be simple but still catchy so it's easily remembered  magazine making the logo a one word signature stamp so it become more professional. Using models on our front cover is going to be the main focus point of the magazine so therefore they must be of good standard quality and well thought, and decide what poses we could possibly use, fashion ideas for the model  to make the magazine more attractive and a confident looking magazine.

Ideas

Came up with ideas about what magazines know of which included well magazines such as Q, Vibe, Smash Hits, Kerrang, Q. Then we thought of some well known artists that would be included in magazines and thought of Lady Gaga, Lily Allen, Kings of Leon, Kanye West. Then decided what colours look professional  for music magazine that will make it more noticable for readers, this colours included green, yellow, black, white, red, gold and blue, so these are the colours that going to be considered when making my magazine.

We then narrowed our ideas down into different groups of ideas within what music we will include in the magazine. Thought of 3 music genres and picked Rap, Indie/Rock and Pop music then within each type of music we thought of what music magazines represent these music genres. So within Rap the magazines are 'Complex', 'RAP up, 'Hip Hop' and 'Vibe' some of the magazines we knew and others is what we found during research. Next was Pop music was 'Sugar', 'Top of the Pops', 'Vibe' and 'Smash Hits' and we looked into what consists of each magazine and what was different by looking at the layout, colour scheme, images and use of text depending on the type of genre.

Inspirational Ideas for Contents Page

Q Contents Page

Kerrang Contents Page
This example of Kerrang! contents page, and in this contents page the main story and focus point is the image of the artist 'Slash' so you get the sense this is the main image of the page because it draws the readers attention, there is no text about the image other than the word 'Slash', because Kerrang think that people don't need much information to draw people to read the page it says it's featured on as they will automatically turn to that page. The colour of Kerrang is used on the front cover as well as the contents page, the use of yellow, white, balck and red and these colours associate with the genre of the music which is rock/indie. The images in the page are very dark and dull so this draws more attention to the text and font colours. They use sub headings for each key feature in the magazine for example in this page they include Feedback, News, and Live Reviews etc. and they stand out because they are divided into different sections. I think the features can appeal to the magazine target audience as i think its what readers would like to see and read about. There is a few images on this contents page to even out the amount of text getting used because I think they don't want to cramp in too much information in the first page to bore the readers. On the right hand side it shows a editors column and what includes in 'this weeks' Kerrang! to get the readers to see what the editor has to say about the magazine. I like the amount of text getting used and the amount of images as it balances it out to equal them out so people can look at both.

NME Contents Page

This is an example of NME music magazines contents page. The main story for this contents page is about the band Kasabian, with a brief paragraph and picture which is presented in the middle of the page make this the main focus point of the contents page, it gets the auidence to read. The colours and theme NME uses the same colours for the contents page as on the front cover which is black, white and red colour scheme. There is a clash of yellow getting used in the contents page to try draw attention to that text so the information that is getting potrayed. NME uses sub headings so the reader can easily find the article they want to read, this is the sort of convention most magazines use. In NME magazine it is divided into six parts News, Radar, Reviews, Live, Features and Plus. The page numbers are next to the articles this helps the reader find what they are looking for. The features on the contents page would help appeal to their target audience because the band that is presented  are familiar and well known so the information that is shown they would be interested in. On the left hand side of the page is the band index advertising all of the artists that are featured in the magazine issue and there are page numbers so that the reader knows what page they are featured on. There is not a lot of pictures only one main image of the band 'Kasabian' used on the contents page it is more text this is could mean it's a magazine that has more information inside the rest of the magazine. I think the contents page is set out quite well because its well organised and uses every little space of the page, but however this makes it look quite busy and untidy, but overall think it's got enough information the page needs.

Inspirational Ideas for Doublepage Spreads

Q Magazine Double Page Spread
This Double page spread is from the magazine 'Q'. The layout of the magazine is neat and well presented, with a large picture of the artist 'Lady Gaga' on the left side and then text on the right side. There is no title on this double page spread, only the full A4 size image of the main focus of the article, with the artist been well recognised you don't need a title, but her name is displayed in the upper right hand corner. This gets the viewers to automatically read on further to find out the exclusive information that Q has to offer of one of the most famous woman in the world of the moment. The way Lady Gaga is featured wearing a outfit and posing in a way which would entice readers would find the female form attractive. The editors of the magazine have ensured the article has arousing and sexual content, as it sells well.  Gaga is presented to the audience as being multi-genred as she is well known for her pop music, but also being capable to sway into a more rockstar role. The image is a medium close up of Lady Gaga featured on the left hand side of the double page spread, taking up half the article, showing that the image has significance. The photo has been digitally edited from colour to greyscale effect. This means that the double page spread can focus on the three main colours, black, red and white. These colours anchor the genre of Q magazine. The enlarged vibrant red 'L' is featured behind the text not only to alias but also the colour of it anchors Q magazine style. The use of the text separated into 3 colums making it have a long effect making the page look bigger, the font size is small so that more information on the article can be placed onto the oppisite side of the image, the text is very simple so it draws more attention to the image rather than the text, so the main focus point is the image.

NME Double Page Spread
http://beauthompsonchs.files.wordpress.com/2012/01/nme-pete-doherty.jpgThis double page spread of the well know 'NME' music magazine. As you can see one half of the page is dedicated to an image and then the otherside an article. On the left hand side which includes the image of Pete Doherty, and this image usually relates to the front cover picture used. The model pose is a casual look whilst holding alcohol beverages, everything about the picture is casual from the clothes that he is wearing and the body lanuage. The image looks like a dusty, dull also looks like in some senses sepia effect has been used to give it a brigher effect to enlight the models facial features. It looks as thought the background of the model is set outside giving a sense of freedom is been allowed which would draw in the readers attention. The title overlaps the image on the left hand side in the middle of the page the text is in line with each other, whilst being spacious making the page look a lot bigger. The colour of the title is orange and white creating more light on the page, but also i think it creates a crisper and clean look to the page. On other half of the page it includes an article about Pete which is seperated into 3 colums to make it look more organised a easy to read. On the left hand side of the right side of the double page spread the use of the letter 'A' draws the attention of the reader, due to the large font size making you look on the article. So both sides of the double page spreads can be seen as the main focus point to the reader. What I like about this double page spread is the use of variety texts, this makes it look very professional even with the grunge look it has to it, and from this page you can tell it's a typical rock/indie magazine from the use of colours as it has a dirt look to it.

Q Magazine Double Page Spread
Q magazine double page spread and the first thing you notice is the main image and the colours used because it's grabs the readers attention. Typical colours that are associated with America is the red, white and blue for the American flag and you get a sense it's the american flag that the model is sitting on because of the colour use and the main title 'USA got the love'. The use of the clours black and grey giving the double page spread a shadow effect, drawing more attention to the main picture making it the main focus point as  the photo takes up about a page and half making the picture look more interesting and exciting for the reader. The fonts used in the article give it a sophisticated look, to go with the singers pose that makes the magazine professional. The use of colums on the right side of the page helps make the article look both neat and organised, but also acts to break up the text making it easier to read without looking too long and boring. The overlap of the image on the 'USA' text making the picture again be the focus point. The title USA shadows behind the image senses that both of these take up most of both pages is significant to the double page spread and even the magazine.

Inspirational Ideas for Front Cover of our Magazine.

Q Magazine Front Cover
This is the first magazine that inspired us to create a similar theme magazine because the style is really professional and is a very successful music magazine. The layout is very conventional in most magazines. With the use of bright colours in the main text, the layout in which the images have been placed. From looking at the front cover the target audience seems to have a target auidence of the age group 16-20+. The model (Lily Allen) pose shows that she confident making other readers feel good about themselves making it more likely for people to read the magazine making them feel good about themselves. With the logo it's well known as a music magazine from just the letter 'Q' and it stands out from the rest of the magazines in a store with the large font size and bright red. Numbers used on the front cover the '25' makes it seem more believable to the audience making them want to know what is it by buying the magazine as they think it's an achieveable number. The colour pallet of the blue font only used in small amounts making it more effect to the reader because it contrasts to the red logo, it also brightens up the magazine and I like how just one colour can simply tansform the whole front cover of the magazine. Even though you don't usually see Q magazine use the clour blue, you can still tell it's Q because they are highly recongised with the logo, with it always in the left side of the front cover. What I like about this front cover isthe layout as there is not a lot use of text but it's still really effective, less is more in some cases. The colour is also very bright and light with the light white/greg background of the image making it stand out more compared to other magazines in shops, this one is more likely to stand out because a lot of magazines use similar colour scheme, whereas this is different making it become more recongised.
On the top right side of the magazine it uses big bold text to make the 3 bands displayed stand out more, with them been well recongised bands/singers people will want to read about them, getting more people to purchase the magazine. The masthead on this front cover is at the bottom of the page, but with it been at the bottom it is less likely to get noticed, but however this demonstrates differently as you seem to notice this more due to the bold, white font, with a clash of black background, i think this will look very effective on my front cover so I will include this in my magazine. Q give their audience reader a bigger outlook in music industry and found it be more attractive to all readers and give people background knowledge.

NME Magazine Front Cover
The second magazine that I researched was NME and likewise with Q magazine, NME has a very conventinal style as well. As you can see in this magazine it has a masthead thats placed in the top left corner of the magazine and the text inside the masthead is of a large font so it gains the readers or auidences attention. But with the NME logo overlapping the masthead draws great attention to the logo rather than the masthead, this isn't necessary for the reader to recongise magazine. The skyline helps to encourage people to pick up the magazine and within the masthead the word 'news'it creates a sort of mystery making the audience more likely to buy the magazine so they can read all about the two band featured in masthead. The use of a lot of text on the magazine down the left side of the magazine This is a very clever technique, as in stores many magazines may overlap one another on a shelf, however it is the left side which is usually still visible to audiences, therefore the articles featured in the magazine will still be viewable.
The main headline featuring the band 'Alex Turner & Kane Miles'is a different colour to the rest of the text in the sell lines, the colour white makes it look simple, whilst remaining professional. The use of the image again is simple making it more dramtic and effective. The colour black allows the image to stand out with from the red and white. But however could argue that the image appears to shadow behind the word 'shadow' due to the main image dull, black, lack of shape and body language they appear to act like 'shadows'. However the singers are the main feature and focal point of the magazine, with the eye contact to the reader it will gain attention straight away to the front cover, which encourages them to purchase the magazine.
The text is pretty much plain, which in some cases can be more effective, because if less is going on making it less busy and not confusing the reader. Also the text consists of bold font with just a small description underneath in a normal font. With numerous text placed on the front cover, the bold allows each title to stand out, which is important for gaining readers attention, making them become more interested in magazine resluting in picking up and purchasing the magazine. The colour scheme was the use of black, white and red, creating a very effective professional look also those colours have been identified with a association with 'indie rock' magaxine music genre, making the audience aware of what the magazine contains, for example you are less likely to see a pop band in NME. What i like most about the front cover is the layout, something I would use for my magazine cover, the way the text is situated, and the place the logo is seated, i will use a similar colourscheme of black, white and red this is because i will be using the same music genre included in the magazine.

NME Magazine Front Cover
Another magazine front cover that is NME. The first thing I noticed on this front cover was the use of the clour gold, this made the magazine look important, so gets the reader wanting to but this magazine because it suggests buying this will make you feel important. The colour gold also gives this magazine a professional look because the colour gold is associated with wealth. This colour gold plays a signifcant role of this front cover because it's also a light colour, making it become brighter and highlighting the models facial features. The model is seen as relaxed and calm making the reader feel more approachable to the magazine, the model maintains eye contact with the reader, drawing in the reader because it's creating a connetion with the magazine an audience reader. The model also is in front of the magazine name/logo giving the model a bigger importance than the actual name of the magazine because people can recognise which magazine it is from the layout displayed, due to the colour scheme..  The use of the circle shape in the top right corner stands out from everything else that's going on in the magazine as the use of capital letter on 'WIN!' draws in the reader attention notifying the fact that the if you purchase the magazine you could win. NME is an indie/rock magazine which is refelcted in the front cover as it is very dark but bright with the red and white, that is associated with that music genre and people know this by comparing similar genre magazines, likewise it has a similar colour scheme with Q magazine. The lightening of the magazine has brightened up the front cover of the magazine making the presentation of how the magazine is represented as a music magazine, by making the light look as though it's a spotlight on the singer, potraying when the signer is performing on stage, this could be why the editors of the magazine have created this affect to make readers feel as though close to the singer. From this magazine I will use the colour gold as a block of colour on my front cover to help enlightening the front cover and making a more professional look.

Kerrang Magazine Front Cover
Kerrang is also another inspiring magazine. In this front cover Kerrang magazine has a wide range of colours used to make the whole front cover stand out. For example the yellow is a great contrasting colour and making it a key feature and focus point,  from the other colours, black and white that is used to create a theme that is used throughout Kerrang issues. The use of the bold numbers makes the number 100 seem larger than what it is grabing the readers attention. Various artists have been used to attract different target audiences to the magazine and looking at the magazine you can tell the genre is based on rock. The position of the model shows that he is fearless and makes the audience feel the same, also the pose that is presented shows great confidence from his body language and the way he holds his microphone. The masthead at the top of the magazine is presented small and not really noticable but still has an impact on the reader. There is numerous of images presented on the front cover which makes it look messy and a lot going on especially with each image is demonstrating a different pose. Kerrang title is right across the top of the magazine just under the masthead, putting all the focus on the title to get audiences attention, the use of the text for it is a large font that has a smashed effect, giving the sense the magazine is a rock music magazine. With kerrang being a rock magazine it is shown in the front cover with the bright scase colours used to and smashed titles give the impression that is rock which is shown by the singers themselves and from the costumes that the models are wearing, from there clothes you get a sense that they take there image seriously and care about how they present themselves giving there own image to get recongised by audience.
